Well the first article that I published with Info Barrel went live yesterday. It only took about 3 days to be reviewed and accepted, which is pretty good. I was disappointed to read it and find a typo that I missed however, so I edited and submitted the edit. I figured it would take a couple more days for the edit to be reviewed and accepted, but was pleasantly surprised to find that the edited article was live within hours.
The article is titled Top 10 Scariest Movies of All Time. I don't expect to get many, if any, adsense clicks with this article. Frankly, it's not really a profitable topic, but I was in a hurry to get that first article submitted, and decided to write something fun that I know about. It has surprisingly received 11 views in just the first day, which tells me a little something about the potential success of Info Barrel.
As an update on my status, I've got 9 articles written right now. As I had mentioned yesterday, once I get to 10 articles I plan to submit them all. I find that it's keeping me a bit more focused to just write and save articles, rather than writing one then going to Info Barrel to submit it before writing another. I had stated a couple days ago that my goal for the remained of June was to post 60 articles... I've begun to second guess that goal. I seem to have underestimated the amount of free time that I have at the moment. Sure, if I pulled some late nights doing nothing but writing I could possibly pull it off, but that seems unnecessary.That being said, I've revised my June goal to 40 articles. I've got 9 down, so that means I need 31 more in the next 11 days. This is a much more attainable goal for me at this point in time.
One final note I'd like to make about Info Barrel is the helpfulness of the forums. The website has built a great community of very helpful writers that are always willing to help out new writers. It's nice to have that little bit of support and know that there are others who remember what it was like to just be starting out in this game, and that they are there to help. Day 3 and 4: Writing, Writing, and more Writing
Busy couple of days. Yesterday was extremely productive on the research front. I've got about 20 topics with strong keywords that should hopefully do well in search engines. Four of those articles have been written, and I'm hoping to churn out the rest by the end of the weekend.
My curiosity about the potential of Info Barrel got me searching google for others who have done well with this website. I came across a blog where someone did an experiment with Info Barrel. The experiment involved submitting 100 articles within a month, and seeing what type of earnings that generated. As you can see, these 100 articles generated $95 within a week for this person. Those are encouraging figures. That is nearly $400 per month if those earnings were to remain steady.
Now I may not be as experienced with SEO and content writing as this person, so I don't expect to make quite that much, at least not at first. But if I can get my first 100 articles up, I see no reason why I couldn't be earning at least a couple hundred per month. That sum would put me almost half way to my goal.
Today's goal is to get two more articles written. Doesn't sound like much, but I do have a full time job to go to that I will be at for 11 hours today. I'm hoping that by the time I get home I won't be too tired and can get two more written. I intend to wait until I get 10 articles written then submit them all at once (aside from the first one which I already submitted just to see how long the review process takes). At Info Barrel, you can gain pre-approval status once you've submitted 10 articles and been a member for at least 14 days. At that point you no longer have to wait for articles to be reviewed, and they will go live almost instantly.

Day 2: Keyword Research
So yesterday was kind of my setup day. I signed up with Info Barrel, submitted my blog URL to google, claimed my blog on Technorati, and wrote down a list of articles that I'm going to write. As of right now I have a list of ten or so articles topics. I know that if I want any traffic when they are published I have to use good SEO, so it's important that for each article topic I write down two or three keywords or phrases that will do well in google. I'm not entirely certain which keyword research tool I should use, I certainly don't want to pay for one. This time around I'm leaning toward using google's Adwords keyword tool. In the past I remember playing around with it and it gives you the number of both global and local searches for a term, as well as an indication of the level of competition for that phrase.
The primary goal for today is keyword research for SEO purposes, and when that is done I intend to write my first 3 articles. It's going to be a stretch to get all of that done today, as I will be at my full time job for the next 9 hours. It looks like it's going to be a late night for me if I wish to complete everything, but that's nothing unusual. I'm a total night owl and end up surfing around the web until 2 or 3AM most nights anyway. So I might as well be productive if I'm going to be up late.

Well, it's just about midnight and I am a little behind where I wanted to be. It was a long busy day, and frankly I was exhausted by the time I got home from work. I've done my keyword research, and wrote one article for Info Barrel, but I'm afraid that's all that's the last thing that will be accomplished tonight. I had intended to write three articles, but time just isn't permitting it. I'll have to work extra hard tomorrow.

Day 1: Signed Up With Info Barrel
In yesterday's post I had mentioned that I would use Bukisa as my starting point, but after some deliberation I've changed my mind. Info Barrel will be the first website that I begin writing for, and there are a couple of reasons for this. First, they offer a much more generous pay structure than Bukisa, and probably the most generous pay (75% of Adsense revenue) of any of the major content production websites. While Bukisa has a slightly higher Alexa rank, I believe the difference in pay with Info Barrel will make up for a slight decrease in traffic.
The goal for the remainder of June is to write 60 articles at Info Barrel. Today is June 15th, so that gives me 16 days to work toward that goal. That means that each day I should be writing 3-4 new articles, which is not too daunting of a task. I have not set a monetary goal, as it seems pretty foolish to expect much with articles that are all 2 weeks old at the most. Heck, I would be ecstatic to earn more than a dollar by the end of June.
One thing I am unsure of is how long the review process on articles will take. It very well may be that even though I write and submit 60 articles by the end of the month, none of them are actually reviewed and published by then. I'll have to wait and see, and will of course keep this blog updated on my progress.

Just as I'm new to writing online, I'm also new to traffic generation. If I want to get people reading, I've got to figure out what works to bring in new readers. The Journey Begins
I, like many others, have been searching for years for a way to make an online income. I've dabbled in affiliate marketing,I've tried buying and selling on ebay, and I've filled out more surveys than I'd care to admit. However, none of these methods have brought me much success and, in some cases, have cost me money.
Unlike some, I am not out looking to get rich online. My expectations are not to make thousands of dollars a day, or even enough to quit my full time job. What I do hope to accomplish is to simply generate a second income online. I have set my goal at $500 per month. I believe this figure is attainable and is sizable enough to make a noticeable difference.
While many look to affiliate marketing as a source of income, that is not the route I wish to take. I will explore as many other options as it takes to attain my goal, so long as there is no financial investment. The idea here is to make money, spending money to make money seems counter-intuitive to me at this point, especially when there is no guarantee of earning a penny. Perhaps once I've began earning enough monthly to cover domain name and web hosting costs I will consider some methods that require a website.

In my search for money making ideas I've learned of a handful of websites that allow you to publish articles, and pay you a share of the ad revenue that your articles generate. The most notable, and therefore the ones that I will try, are: Associated Content, Info Barrel, Hubpages, eHow, and Bukisa.
